It was in 1943 in San Cesario di Lecce, a village of tailors from the Salentino hinterland when Carmelo Vergallo launched the generation of Vergallo tailors. Having taken the needle in his hand out of tradition but also out of passion, his thread unified the whole family from one generation to the next.
Sartoria Vergallo is tailoring on a human scale. Inheriting an old family tradition, today Varese boasts one of the youngest artisans of Italian fashion, Gianni Cleopazzo, who has been recognised by the Italian National Academy of Tailors, a prestigious institute that since 1785 has recognised quality artisan tailors, after an extensive examination of the skills acquired during their working life.
He is at the head of the team, a craftsman with a perspective of the modern workshop, where the value of the work is manual and machines do not substitute the sensitivity of the hand and eye, despite the effort it costs.
A man’s suit is sewn with 30.051 stitches and threaded by as many hand movements during 40 hours of work in the Varese workshop. The process starts with taking the measurements carefully, in order to then make the personal sewing pattern of the customer which for every new garment will give life to a new fabric based on his figure.
The fabrics offered are selected from the best Italian and English suppliers, and it is always wool, cotton, silk and mixes that offer the guarantee of natural fibre. They offer a selection from: Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Holland & Sherry, Vitale Barberis, Drapers, Scabal.
It goes without saying that everything is made by hand – this is bespoke.
Sartoria Vergallo offers a unique Bespoke service, making a suit from scratch according to your body shape and requirements. They offer three different setups for meetings:
- International monthly Trunk Shows in London;
- Visit at their boutique in Varese.
Sartoria Vergallo's starting prices are:

The style of Sartoria Vergallo's suits has a lot in common with the Milan's tradition: it is noticeably softer in the chest and shoulder than anything English, with beautifully curved breast and hip pockets, but is not as soft as Neapolitan tailoring. There is even a hint of roping to the shoulder. The armhole and gorge are high, with a close waist.
The shape of the jacket highlights the wonderful 'Italian' effect of being soft in the structure yet strong in the silhouette.
The incredible finesse of Sartoria Vergallo's pieces is reached by an incredible attention to details.
